A Floating City of Debris and Excess
A study into a landscape of extraction, manufacture, speculation and excess.
Economies of debris, dreams of space and teetering workshops fuel a city built on increasingly eroding foundations.
Drifting in to the city is unlike any other. The city has a subconscious, subterranean presence which is visible from afar through debris in the water obscures the enormity of the earth below. This debris is the lifeblood of the city, farmed, harvested and processed- a constant process of cleansing of impurity and otherness.
The city is revised and re-appropriated every day, depending on where you look, and what you are able to see. Some would say the cycle of change is more frequent, and more pronounced. This depends on your vantage point.
2. Fields of Indestructible Left-Overs
There are signs of occupation, both above and below the surface, and constructed towers of indestructible leftovers form a landscape of reuse. As the tide comes in an out of the elds, the landscape acts as a vast sieve, dredging and filtering the flow, accumulating potent material.
This is the result: a landscape of endless accumulation and repurpose. Residents who have never left wonder about where the city’s opposite might be, a space which inversely revels in the explosion of goods, endlessly renewing itself everyday, and discarding the past to the industries of another place.
There are moments in the field which have risen above the distressed. These are the workshops: connected and electrified, pockets of potential.
3. The Ship
The are rumours in the elds of an alchemical tower which has been built to withstand enormous pressure, and operated in the correct way could transform the potential of material seemingly wasted into enormous value.
Without a close inspection, it could be dismissed as another of the ruined towers, but there are those who have looked closer and have taken it for the secret location of Nkoloso’s unexploded rocket, now undoubtedly reappropriated in the manner of the city.
The Flatlands are the site of the city’s opulence. Raised above the irregular, tidal landscape of the fields, the flat lands are a sparsely populated, vertical landscape which would appear to defy the laws of gravity.
Held within an invisible friction between the planes of the landscape, and obeying the laws of some other force, the flatlands appear to have emerged from a geological eruption. The product of the abundance of the earth, this area is clean, though difficult to inhabit on account of the prohibitive smoothness of the surface and the inaccessibility of the terrain.
Few have ventured behind the Flatlands to observe the real reason for their emergence. The Factories are plugged into the city’s depths and are perpetually engaged in drawing raw material from it’s depths.
The Flatlands provide an effective shield, screening the worst of the activity from the elds below. Some of the machinations are unavoidable. The upper reaches of the Flatlands have been stained a mild grey - though this has given them the appearance of clouds just about to open up - and often, material will be lost from leaks and breakages in transit.
